WELCOME TO TAROOM
Taroom is a small town in Queensland's Shire of Banana, with part of the locality also falling in the Western Downs Region. It’s set on the Dawson River and lies along the Leichhardt Highway, making it a key stop in the region.
A standout landmark is the rare Steel Wings windmill near the river — one of only two still working in the world. Built in the early 1900s, its unique design features a fan spinning inside a fully pivoting steel frame. It’s a striking symbol of Taroom’s rich agricultural and pioneering history.
Explorer Ludwig Leichhardt passed through the area in 1844 and carved his initials into a coolabah tree, now known as the Leichhardt Tree - still standing in town today.
A short walk or drive up Kelman Street takes you to Gilbert’s Lookout, named after naturalist John Gilbert, who joined Leichhardt’s expedition. The lookout offers panoramic views and features a memorial to Gilbert.
